Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the production there is not enough production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. It affects the heart rate, temperature of the body, and all the aspects of metabolism. It is mostly seen in older women and can be treated through thyroid hormone replacement.

Some patients despite taking the thyroxine medications will not feel better. They will need careful assessment for any thyroid-related and unrelated causes for these symptoms. Some patients also need alternative forms of thyroxine as appropriate.
